so many boys, by muesli

so many boys

I have held to my chest

love seeping through my palms

fingers curled in their hair

so many boys

i have fed my words of comfort

in great ladles full of kisses

tiptoeing carefully through

their personal diet of anxieties

every night they’re broken

the darkness weighing on their chests

and i hold them even closer

and silently i work

and in the morning they are lighter

and in the morning

they don’t need me any more
